Der Roman dreht sich um eine Farm, die er in einem küstennahen Hain mit alten Bäumen errichtete, und dokumentiert seine Romanze mit einer jungen Frau, die eine Nachfahrin des Nehalem-Indianerstamms war. Seine Themen – das Verlassen des Vertrauten und das Finden von Trost und Geborgenheit an einem neuen Ort – sind auch heute noch aktuell.
