Description Calvin et Millie, deux jeunes adultes sans but, n'avaient pas l'intention de disparaître de la surface de la Terre, mais lorsqu'ils sont tombés sur un manoir abandonné lors d'une randonnée dans les Adirondacks, c'est exactement ce qu'ils ont fait. Se prélassant dans la lumière d'automne et perdus parmi les piles de livres de poche, ils ont décidé de passer l'hiver dans leur forteresse trouvée. Le printemps a apporté des hordes d'animaux sauvages, à l'intérieur comme à l'extérieur, mais aucune trace d'autres humains (à part celui qui grandissait dans le ventre de Millie). Il faudra encore quatre ans avant que la famille naissante ne soit forcée de quitter leur maison supposée, mais ils ne comptent pas partir sans se battre.
