Malam Tahun Baru 2022,

Mérida, Yucatán.

Kembang api menerangi langit malam Mérida tua, kilauannya memantul di permukaan kolam yang beriak. Tersembunyi di balik fasad kolonial yang sederhana terdapat oasis modernis ini, di mana permukaan kaca dan travertine membingkai taman yang penuh kehidupan: pohon palem, bunga burung cendrawasih, tanaman jahe berdaun lebat di tepi kolam. Pohon jambu biji, sarat dengan buah matang, memenuhi udara dengan manisnya, bercampur dengan aroma bunga champaca yang pekat dan aroma kayu tropis yang dalam. Di bawah pohon, patung dewa Maya yang lapuk terkubur setengah, diam-diam membisikkan kisah-kisah kuno yang terjalin dalam keseharian kota yang semarak ini.
