“Creosote was the very first accord I ever attempted as a beginning perfumer—and it
failed spectacularly. Swampy, dank, nothing like the fresh miracle of desert rain I was
trying to capture. But I grew up here in the Sonoran Desert, and that scent has been part of my life since childhood. I have memories of walking barefoot through channels of runoff after summer monsoons, as the air dropped 20 degrees and the whole landscape transformed. So I had to keep trying. For sixteen years, every time I evaluated a new material, I wondered if it could be the missing piece. The creosote bush itself is tricky—it doesn't smell particularly "natural." There are green, leafy notes, sure, but also guaiacol (the same smoky note in leather accords), hints of turpentine and tar, plus an aquatic freshness when you crush the leaves. After all this time, I've settled on this version—not a photorealistic recreation, but the essence of what desert rain actually feels like.”- Bruno Fazzolari
