Description April 1687, The Orangery, Versailles.
More than a thousand Mediterranean trees are housed in the cathedral-like galleries of the Orangery. Built by the King's architect to impress courtiers, the tree-lined space became a theatrical setting to entertain the Court. Inside, the gardeners would build bonfires to keep the trees warm so when the Sun King visited, the heady scent of firewood blended with his beloved orange blossoms would emit a generous golden aura.
An opulent formula including 24 karat gold, transporting you to the Palace of Versailles at its apex. L'Or de Louis evokes the moments when Louis XIV and his Court would visit the Grand Orangery to delight in the flowering orange trees warmed by bonfires. A bright orange blossom with a warm, woody background, including notes of orange blossom absolute, pomegranate, honey, and firewood smoke. The depth and almost leathery base of this perfume will convey its exceptional quality, as well as lead the wearer to look forward to the next wear every time it is visited.

The dry-down is where this one wins me over—the Florentine orris and cedar keep the honeyed florals from turning syrupy, and it lingers on skin for a solid six hours before fading into a soft musk. Smells expensive without being loud, which is exactly what I wanted for office days.

The pomegranate and orange blossom hit immediately—bright and almost tart—but it’s the honeyed orris that keeps pulling me back for another sniff. Lasts a solid six hours on my skin, and the cedar shows up just as I’m about to forget it’s there. Beautifully balanced for something so floral.

The dry-down is where this one shines—that Florentine orris and cedar keep the honey from going too sweet, and it lingers on my coat for a full day. I keep catching whiffs of the pomegranate cutting through the jasmine, which feels unexpectedly fresh for a floral this rich.
