Description The light was at twilight. The horses neighed with fatigue. It was time to stop. The men dismounted. Their bodies were exhausted and dusty. The tents were set up. The mountains of Kashmir cast their shadows over the vast plain with its short grass. Despite the cool evening air, the weather remained mild. Emperor Alexander gathered his troops. The journey had been arduous. Copper helmet in hand, he raised the tip of his sword towards the dark sky. On the edge of the blade, the moon cast its silvery hue, flooding the entire plain with a blinding ray. It was the symbol of all power. Gradually, the camp sank into a restorative sleep. At dawn, the men could not believe their eyes. The ground was covered with a purple mantle. Millions of flowers had sprung up overnight. As far as the eye could see. Faced with such a miracle, Emperor Alexander turned to his advisors. The omens were not favorable. The retreat was sounded at the call of the horn. The white flag was raised. Within a few hours, the men left the plain. The wind rose. The crocus sativus (the saffron flower), of purple color, slowly waved their petals. Calm and peace had returned.
