Description Its name comes from the Greek narkè, meaning numbing, and no other description could better define this plant with narcotic power. The narcissus is the very picture of delicacy; its fragrance is anything but. In the field, it exudes a heady odor resembling jasmine and ylang-ylang. Its striking character is best expressed when the flower is processed into an absolute. In this form, it is a motley vixen – at once green, spicy, white floral, hay-like, honeyed and animalic.

Ruby ★★★★★

For a book about a single flower, the breadth here is impressive—seven contributors cover everything from the myth to the actual scent profiles. The essays are short enough to read in one sitting but dense with the kind of detail that makes you look at narcissus differently.

The deep dive on narcissus as both flower and perfumery ingredient is exactly the kind of niche history I was hoping for, and the seven-author structure keeps each chapter refreshingly distinct. I’ve already reread the section on its symbolic evolution twice — it’s that good. Not a coffee-table book

The concise, essay-style chapters from seven different authors make this a surprisingly quick read for such a niche topic, and the way it traces the flower’s symbolism from myth to modern fragrance feels genuinely fresh. I’ve already gone back to reread the section on its olfactory profile twice.
